- These extra heavy duty cranes are EOT cranes which are used to feed scrap into the furnace. These cranes work in very extreme heat and dusty conditions and have to be specially designed to withstand these extreme conditions.
- In some steel plants, these cranes are also sometimes used to also transport Molten Metal and therefore have to be designed accordingly.
- Special types of Heat Shields, Panel e-rooms / Cabins with air conditioners and other features are provided to withstand the very high temperatures.

Due to the extreme conditions of very high temperature and heavy dust, these cranes have very high safety features. As they are sometimes even used to carry molten metal, the cranes are designed like Molten Metal Handling cranes using the same safety factors and design parameters.
The cranes used for scrap charging are designed for continuous operations at very high speeds, to reduce production time without compromising safety. They are very critical for feeding the raw material to the furnace and therefore should have minimum maintenance.
